Trigger warning : violence, sexual violence, intense joy
One of the things I have noticed about my writing is there is a transformative element in them. In SNEXX, a performance piece done at the Theater with Paris Moves, a woman engages snakes, and sustains all their ways of being, incorporating them into herself and transcending them.
In Through Names aka the ineffable quality that attracts people to the young girl has them delirious to the point of violence.
She out paces them.
What can I say , I am a product of this culture, steeped in violence, in particular violence against women. So I wrote this novel.
Also please note Though Names was a screenplay. It is much easier to show a 30 seconds violent montage in a dream state of partially remembered, partially suppressed attacks.
When I shifted to the novel format I crystallized the blurry flashes into sections, which gave weight and presence. To the actions The violence was no longer a blip on a screen. It was in your face, rip your clothes, force yourself brutality.
I gave the book to a reader who pointed out I had four heavy scenes in the first 30 pages.
I thinned the scenes, pruning down the violence. Some remains. The hero of the story is also from this culture and feels the violence following her, in the air. She, more poetically, evolves.
